Ballet and Symphony at the Clay Center this April

A collaboration between the River City Youth Ballet and the West Virginian Symphony will be staged on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at the Clay Center. “Peter and the Wolf” will start the ball rolling at 7pm, followed by “The Magical Toyshop.”
Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” is a story spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra which represents each dancing character with a particular instrument and musical theme. How long have you been living in Charleston, and why did you decide to settle in this city?
I was born and raised in Charleston (the Fort Hill area)… attended George Washington High, then Miami Dade Community College in Florida. I spent my early professional years in Chicago.
I came back to Charleston in mid 70′s and have been here ever since. Reason being, it’s a great place to raise kids… low crime rate, good schools… and good quality health care is available.

Appalachian Power Park

On April 9th, baseball season opens with a game between West Virginia Power and the Lexington Legends at the Appalachian Power Park. Home of the minor league baseball team in the South Athlantic League, the stadium is located at the East End of Charleston, WV.

Open Stage for Kids on March 27

The Unity of Kanawha Valley is having another round of Open Stage of Kids for childrens ages 5 to 15 years old.
Hosted by Ron Sowell and Sky Kershner, kids are encouraged to share whatever talent they posses. They can play an instrument, sing a song, read a book, recite a poem, tell a joke, perform a magic trick, or just talk to the audience. Kids of all ages are welcomed, and even adults too!

Temple B’nai Israel

Judaism had an early start in Charleston. Congregation B’nai Israel or Temple Israel was founded in 1856 — seven years before the state of West Virginia was even created. However, the discovery of the congregation’s cemetery (WV’s oldest Jewish cemetery) hints that it might even be earlier.

Capital City Striders

One of West Virginia’s admirable organizations, the Capital City Strider focuses on youth development through sports. Student athletes who are members of the team hone their track and field skills during summer break, and particpate in club activities aimed to make positive changes in the community. This non-profit organization operates on donations and grants from sponsors throughout the state.
