The Saint Agnes Child Development Center has recently opened it doors for Drop-Ins, to help families with young children in Kanawha city. The center has also opened its Infants room, to better cater for the needs of the community.

November 19 is the date of Religious Coalition for Community Renewal’s (RCCR) annual Beans and Cornbread Dinner. The dinner is the organization’s annual fundraiser that benefits the Samaritan Inn, Smith Street Station and Jubilee Housing.
Initiated in 1996, the dinner does not require attendees to dress up. It is traditionally held on the Thursday before Thanksgiving, starting at 6pm, and usually ending after an hour. The first Big Bean Dinner was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston. This year, it will be held at the Christ Church United Methodist. …

In an effort to document homegrown family recipes, the The West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services is asking everybody to share their family’s recipes for a cookbook that they plan to publish as “Homespun Love from the Stove: West Virginia Heritage Recipes.”
Send in the recipes that has been passed down from generation to generation, be it soups, salads, desserts, holiday fare, casseroles, vegetable dishes, favorite meals and comfort food. Include your name, country of origin and any family story related to the recipe and e-mail them to wvseniorservices.gov. You can …

The stage is set once more for kids for the Open Stage for Kids by the Unity of Kanawha Valley on Friday, October 23, 2009. Kids of all ages are encouraged to bring their talents to the stage. The show will be hosted by Ron Sowell.
Sign up start at 6pm, but the talent show starts at 6:30pm until 8:00pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Another Open Stage will be held on November 27, for those who aren’t able to sign up for this month’s show.

Everything is set for the East End’s 4-day Halloween celebration, Halloweast. The event will feature several activities spread throughout the four days, held in different locations at Charleston’s East End.
There is something for everybody. Children will surely have fun at the arts and crafts corner on the 28th at The Book exchange, as well as the Trick or Beat party on the 29th. The family can all partake in the HallowEast Family Fun Night at the East End Family Resource Center on Ruffner Avenue, also on the 29th.

The Capitol Market is gearing up for Halloween with its weekly weekend activities. Bring the kids over for The Great Pumpkin Party this Saturday, October 17. Buy a pumpkin and the Capitol Market will provide the paint, brushes and aprons for decorating. Other activities include pumpkin bowling and facepainting and art activities provided by the Clay Center.

On their 60th Anniversary, the Charleston Light Opera Guild is staging Peter Pan, a musical play based on the classic story by James M. Barrie, has sent Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby soaring over Broadway.
Last produced by the Guild in 1999, this anniversary production will be co-produced with the Clay Center on October 30, 31, November 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on November 1 and 8 at 2:00 p.m.

This weekend, book lovers in and around Charleston, WV will be flocking to the Charleston Civic Center for the annual West Virginia Book Festival.
The festival brings together authors, publishers, book vendors and avid readers for a weekend of programs, workshops, seminars and of course, shopping! Books and related merchandise will be available for sale at the festival marketplace featuring works by regional publishers and authors. Charleston Stage Company will present its first production of the 2009-2010 season when it stages William Shakespeare’s “Two Gentlemen of Verona” on Thursday-Saturday, October 15-17 and 22-24 at 7:30 PM at the WVSU Capitol Center Theatre, 123 Summers Street in Charleston.
K.C. Bragg directs the play. The cast includes: Jeff Bukovinsky, Courtney Fint, Brian Roller, Suzanne Lawrence, Tim Mace, Mandy Petry, Greg Morris, Kate Morris, Joe Wallace, Emily Alice Dunn, Dan Heyman and “Abbie” as Crab the dog.
