“Beckley Unplugged,” an all-day acoustic music festival May 19 on the Mountain State University campus, blends together gospel, country, bluegrass, jazz and reggae acts under one roof.
Featured performers include members of The Boatmen, Lady D, the MSU Appalachian Bluegrass Band, Heart of God Ministries Mass Choir, Diggin’ the Wetha (jazz), The Hatfields (bluegrass), Cody Wickline, The Songcatchers, Shayar and Friends (reggae) and Euphoric Acoustic.
Organized by MSU’s Student Government Association, tickets are just $5. Proceeds benefit the Southern West Virginia Men’s Fellowship Home and Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse.
Musical acts will perform from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the John W. Eye Conference Center. The event also will feature a car show, exhibits by local artists, food vendors, face painting for kids and much more.
Members of the roller derby team The Beckley Area Derby Dames will be on hand to meet and greet the public.
The musical portion of “Beckley Unplugged” will be presented in three stages. The opening stage will consist of primarily gospel music, featuring students from the MSU Appalachian Bluegrass class, local gospel quartets and the Heart of God Ministries Mass Choir.
Stage two will feature traditional country music, contemporary bluegrass and a local jazz ensemble made up of students from area high schools. The evening stage will showcase premier local performers such as The Boatmen, Euphoric Acoustic and Lady D.
Beckley-area businesses and organizations have contributed to the event through donations and sponsorships, including Little General Stores, Padrino’s of Beckley, YMCA of Southern WV, Dr. Kevin Lucky, Spartan Sporting Goods, and BJW Printing.
