THE DROWSY CHAPERONE is a brassy, brash, lively, spicy musical within a comedy. The musical is a nostalgic spoof and celebration of a 1920’s style song and dance frolic as imagined by a die-hard musical theatre fan who plays his favorite cast album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room. The plotted tale of gangsters, show people, millionaires and servants is reminiscent of numerous musicals of the jazz age whose only purpose was to entertain and cheer audience through spectacle, fascinating characters, clever lyrics and melodies, happy endings and the ability to transport audiences into a fantasy that would lift their spirits in times of sadness.
The production began its professional life in Canada and debuted on Broadway in May 2006. With music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, the Broadway production garnered 7 Drama Desk Awards and 5 Tony Awards. Productions have been mounted and toured in London, Japan, Australia and throughout North America. It has been hailed as a rare combination of unprecedented originality. The production is crammed full of every cliché, gag and gimmick from the golden age of musicals.
