Description: Get ready to experience the 12th Annual Civil War weekend at Valley Park. The H.L. Hunley Mobile Exhibit (the world’s first successful combat submarine) will be on display for the full weekend of activities. The exhibit has never been to West Virginia so we are expecting a huge crowd to tour this and to participate in the historical presentations. Parking will be available at Hurricane High School with free shuttle service provided. Battles and Tactical Demonstrations, hands-on activities, horse drawn wagon rides (weather permitting), and visits to the sutler shops and campsites can be enjoyed throughout the weekend. The battles will begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. An artillery night firing will be held Friday March 27th at 9:00 p.m. In addition, a Historical Remembrance Play and Life in the 1860’s Presentation will beheld on Friday evening. A ladies tea and military ball will be held on Saturday evening. President Abe Lincoln, portrayed by Fritz Klein, Lincoln Institute for Education – Springfield, IL, Mary Todd Lincoln, portrayed by Joyce Browning of Charleston, General Robert E. Lee portrayed by Al Stone from Hinton and General U.S. Grant portrayed by Barry Meadows from MacArthur, WV will be available during the weekend for photo opportunities and historical presentations. The event is co-sponsored by Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission, City of Hurricane, and the Hurricane Woman’s Club. The Host Unit is the 1st WV Light Artillery, B Battery. The event is free; however, donations will be accepted to assist with the cost of event production in “Bringing History Alive”.
