Rent is a rock opera with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Boehme. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS.

The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop run at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same off-Broadway theatre was also the musical’s initial home following its official January 25, 1996, opening. Tragically, the show’s creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit. The musical moved to Broadway’s larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.

Cast of the musical include:

MARK COHEN (Caucasian): An aspiring Jewish film-maker. Never leaves home without a camera. Roger’s best friend. He sings & casually narrates.

ROGER DAVIS (Grunge Rock up to Ab, plays guitar): Struggling musician whose girlfriend left and dumped him. He’s a recovering drug addict and depressed until he meets Mimi. He’s a young and good looking leader of a rock band and has a brooding and aggressive side.

MIMI MARQUEZ (Rock voice with high belt, Latino): Benny’s ex girlfriend, now in love with Roger. A dancer in a sexy show, she is a heroin addict. She is extremely likeable, but has dark secrets.

TOM COLLINS (Low blues Baritone, African-American): He is an old friend and roommate of Mark and Roger. He is a computer teacher/philosopher and AIDS activist. Tom is warm and strong with an open personality.

ANGEL SCHUNARD (High Tenor/Falsetto, Latino/Asian): He is a street-drummer and drag queen with a heart of gold. He loves wearing dresses he makes. Angel has AIDS.

The show features characters of a specific ethnicity and it is hoped that it may be cast in that manner. Characters must appear to be in their 20s. Auditioners aged between 18 and 40 years old are invited to try out for roles in the musical. Actors interested in being a part of this exciting production must prepare a musical selection in the style of Rent (rock, pop, gospel or reflective of ‘90s), and must be dressed to move.
