Soak up some culture this Memorial Day weekend in at the State Capitol grounds in Charleston. The annual Vandalia Gathering celebrates ethnic heritage of West Virginia. Featuring homegrown music, traditional arts and crafts and delicious home-cooked specialties, the festival is a fun way for families to get in touch with their roots and for visitors to learn more about the traditions of the mountain state.
Just outside Charleston, there are other events you can enjoy this weeekend. The Greenbrier Valley Theatre in Lewisburg sets the stage for the The Greenbrier Ghost, which features the story of Heaster Shue, who is murdered by her husband and returns in the spirit to relate the story to her mother. The play opens tonight, and will run until June 20. Tickets are priced at $23 for adults, $20 for seniors and $14 for students and children.
If you’re hankering for more active pursuits, you can join the Crying Wolfe Challenge on May 23 over at Bluefield. The WVMBA Sanctioned Event race starts on the Family Friendly Trail and goes through numerous trails of varying difficulty. For more information, visit www.swvac.com.
