One of the most tragic periods in the history of West Virginia is brought to the stage in “Holly Grove”, a new musical drama by the award winning creative duo of Mark Scarpelli and Dan Kehde. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Cabin Creek/Paint Creek Mine War of 1913, Holly Grove celebrates the bravery and courage of the striking miners and their families as they endured nearly a year of cold, starvation and the brutality of life in the tent camps to fight for the simple rights of the working man.

Contemporary Youth Arts Company was founded in 1995 by Dan and Penny Kehde and a group of artistic young people to provide teenagers in the greater Charleston area hands-on access to the performing arts in a drug free environment. Composer Mark Scarpelli joined the organization soon afterward, composing original scores and becoming acting music director for nearly 200 performances. Since its inception, CYAC has produced over 500 main stage performances and toured many social action plays. This season it will perform seven productions including premiers of three new plays.

Tickets: $6 students/seniors, $10 adults. Tickets available at the WVSU box office 342-6522
Date: 2013-06-20

That’s the situation Danae Wells wants to help you with. A high school senior, Danae established From Pauper to Princess, where teen girls can rent or buy formal gowns and dresses for a fraction of the cost. Not only that, Danae can also help you accessorize, from shoes to jewelry to complete the look.

Dress rentals range from $20 to $50 per night, with the condition that the dress must be returned in the same condition as it was lent out. Fees will be charged if stains are found. Dresses for sale costs less than $100. If you’re worrying about the quality of the dresses you’ll be getting for these prices, don’t worry as Danae makes sure that she only stocks dresses that she would personally wear. She also has dresses in a broad range of sizes (from 00 to 32), to ensure that every girl can dress up, no matter their size or shape.

Not only is Danae helping girls by providing budget-friendly dress options, she’s also donating a portion of what she earn in the business to several backpack programs across West Virginia, which provides food, clothing, toiletries, and school supplies to children who cannot afford them.

For inquiries about dress rentals or purchases, or even if you’re keen to donate dresses, you can reach Danae at (304) 415-5937 or frompaupertoprincess@aol.com. With safety and security being primary, our goal is to provide the biker community with enjoyable comradery and fun, great riding opportunities throughout West Virginia and unique entertainment. While the purpose of our rally is to entertain the rider, we also give back to our community.

This year, the CCBB has partnered with HospiceCare as its charity of choice. HospiceCare provides quality hospice and palliative care, consulting and education, as well as bereavement services for terminally ill people, their families and the community throughout 16 counties across central West Virginia.

Many of us have been touched by the services HospiceCare provides and feel this is a great charity to give back to in 2013.
