Kanawha County Public Library celebrates WV’s sesquicentennial

Kanawha County Public LibraryIn celebration of West Virginia’s 150th birthday on June 20, 2013, the Kanawha County Public Library is holding various events in its branches around the Kanawha Valley.

The Clendenin branch will host a whole day celebration, with games, crafts, and other fun activities. There will also be a birthday cake and punch to be provided by the Clendenin Library Advisoryy Board to be served in the afternoon.

Mick Souter will bring his perfomance of “Celebrate West Virginia” to St. Albans at 12 noon. This cultural arts program is aimed to showcase the best of the Mountain State in its 150th year.

There will be afternoon activities at the Elk Valley branch. Starting at 1 pm, there will be craft-making sessions and games. Refreshments will also be served. Attendees who turn in their WV Collect or Create 150 projects will receive a prize.

The Elk Valley branch is also hosting a movie night, featuring “We Are Marshall.” The movie starts at 5:30 pm, and memorabilia from the movie production will be on exhibit. Registration for the movie night is available online.

How do you make a West Virginia purse? Let Vicky Barrett teach you in her instructional sewing class at the Sissonville branch library at 6 pm. Interested participants must contact Pat Abbott (304-984-2244) for registration and the list of materials needed for the class.

Learn about the rich history of West Virginia at the Riverside public library. This is a session fit for the whole family, with story telling, games and crafts to make learning history fun.

National storyteller Susanna Holstein and musican Jeff will bring West Virginia legend and lore to life at the Clendenin branch library at 6 pm.

At the Dunbar branch library, Dr. Bob Henry Baber and George Daugherty of the West Virginia Veterans’ Legacy Project will present their documentary, music, stories, and poems from the project at 6 pm. The books and DVD will also be available for purchase at the event.

Cross Lanes is another one of Mike Souter’s stops for his “Celebrate West Virginia” cultural arts program. The performance at Cross Lanes is sponsored by the Cross Lanes Library Advisory Board, and the GFWC – WV Woman’s Club of Cross Lanes. It will start at 6:30 pm.
