The West Virginia PROMISE

GraduatesThe Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence or the West Virginia PROMISE is a merit-based scholarship program designed to keep qualified students in West Virginia by making college affordable. Deserving students receive scholarships that pays for their college tuition and mandatory fees at a public college or the equivalent dollar amount at a private college.

Students and their parents who are legal residents of West Virginia can apply for this scholarship. The PROMISE program requires that high school students must graduate with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or a B average. The student must also get a minimum 3.0 GPA on the core classes (English, Algebra, Geometry, Math, Trigonometry, Probability and Statistics, Calculus,
History, World Studies, Civics/Government, Sciences). Along with the grade requirement, he or she must also ACT composite score of 22 with a minimum sub-score of 20 in each of the four subject areas (math, science, English and reading); or a combined SAT score of 1020 with at least a minimum sub-score of 490 in the critical reading section and 480 in the math section.

The PROMISE is funded by the video lottery and the state general appropriations.
