Established in the memory of South Charleston resident and war hero, Marine Corps Sargeant Herbert J. Thomas, Jr. Srgt. Thomas died in World War II, after covering a grenade with his own body to protect his fellow soldiers. He was honored posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, West virginia’s first, as well as the Navy Cross, Purple Heart, Presidental Unit Citation and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. The US Navy also honored his memory by christening a US destroyer U.S.S. Herbert J. Thomas on March 26, 1945.
